More about Lights and Sirens from Penguin Books

The first memoir to ever be written about paramedic school, LIGHTS & SIRENS (Berkley Trade Paperback; June 2, 2015; $16, 9780425275238) gives a unique glimpse into a profession many people know only from the outside. LIGHTS & SIRENS illustrates how paramedics are trained in the classroom, what their first experiences in the field are like, and how they do their jobs.

At the age of 36, author Kevin Grange left his job in residential real estate to pursue a career in emergency medicine at UCLA's Daniel Freeman Paramedic Program, considered to be the “Harvard” of paramedic schools, with a reputation for being one of the best and most intense paramedic training programs in the world.

Blending nine months of classroom instruction with ER rotations and a grueling field internship with the Los Angeles Fire Department, UCLA’s medical program is like an intense mix of boot camp meets med school. Few jobs in the world can match the daily dose of stress, trauma and drama that a paramedic calls a typical day at the “office," and few educational settings can match the stress and competitiveness of paramedic school. It would turn out to be the hardest thing he'd ever done--but also the most inspiring.

LIGHTS & SIRENS details the trials paramedic students endure and the tragedies they witness, but it is ultimately about the best part of humanity—people working together to help save human lives.
