Start your healthcare career as an Emergency Medical Technician with our EMT program. The EMT is a front-line, entry-level healthcare provider. As an EMT, you may work in a variety of environments: transporting patients between facilities, responding to emergency calls, in a hospital emergency department, and elsewhere a first-response capability is required. EMT certification and work experience are required for those seeking Paramedic training, and many doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers started their careers as EMTs.

We offer the EMT program in a traditional classroom format, and in an online format with on-site skills instruction. For the online course, we offer three schedule options as described below. All provide the same curriculum and expert UCLA faculty. These courses fill fast, so please register when the course date you prefer is available.

• Accelerated classroom program: Four weeks, in class Monday/Tuesday and Thursday/Friday, 8am-5pm. No class on Wednesdays.

• Online course + Sundays: Live online sessions in the evening for ten weeks, plus self-paced interactive assignments, and 8 Sundays on-site for skills instruction.

• Online course + Four-Day Blocks: Live online sessions in the evening for ten weeks, plus self-paced interactive assignments, and 2 four-day blocks (8 days total) on-site for skills instruction.

• Online course + Evenings: Live online sessions in the evening for ten weeks, plus self-paced interactive assignments, and 16 Tuesday/Thursday evenings on-site for skills instruction.

Live Online Classroom: For the October online courses, live online classrooms are Mondays and Wednesdays, 7pm - 8:30pm. You must attend one of the online classes at the scheduled time, and you may view the other one via recording (or live).

October online course on-site skills instruction: Choose eight Sundays (8am-6pm on Oct 29, Nov 5, 12, 26, Dec 10 & 17, Jan 7 & 14) or two 4-day blocks (8am-6pm on Nov 17-20 & Jan 19-22). Your skills schedule cannot be changed during the program as our skills sessions are staffed for the number of students enrolled.

During the October online/hybrid program, regardless of the skills instruction schedule you choose, you will be taking six online exams over the course of the program. We offer three options for taking these exams, and you may mix and match any combination that is convenient for you. The exams are all identical:

  • You may test in person at our facilities on six Saturdays (dates TBA) at 5220 Pacific Concourse (8a-2p; free parking);
  • You may test in person at our facilities on six Wednesdays (dates TBA) at 1083 Gayley Ave. in Westwood (8a-11a; parking $12);
  • or you may take the exams online at home via ProctorU ($19.75 per exam).

For the online/hybrid program, skills instruction is tightly scheduled, and you must all sessions in the schedule you choose at enrollment (i.e. Sundays, four-day blocks, or evenings). In the traditional classroom program, you may miss up to 8 hours total.

Required Materials: In lieu of a textbook, all EMT courses require that you purchase Jones & Bartlett's online course access and Fisdap testing/skills tracking service, for a total cost of $272. Your enrollment confirmation will include the link to purchase these.

All EMT courses also require two 12-hour ambulance ride-along shifts, which you will schedule during your EMT course.

On successfully completing our EMT program, you will be eligible to take the national certifying exam (National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians – NREMT) and become licensed as an EMT in Los Angeles County.
