The UCLA EMS Instructor Course provides teaching knowledge and skills required to be an effective primary (lead) EMS instructor. The 40-hour curriculum is broken down into modules designed to meet and exceed the National Highway Traffic Safety (NTHSA) curriculum standards for entry-level EMS educators.

Modules include basic principles and practices of learning and motivation, legal and ethical considerations, psychomotor/skills development, scenario/simulation facilitation, coaching and clinical precepting, hybrid and flipped learning methodology, direct instruction, evaluating student competency, research and cultural diversity.

Course schedule: This live online course consists of nine 4-hour evening sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3pm-7pm PST, plus online assignments.

Who it's for: No prior teaching experience is required. Participants are usually experienced EMS practitioners and enthusiastic role models for lifelong learning and professional standards. NTHSA and UCLA recommend that, ideally, the entry-level EMS educator should have successfully completed a course of academic study and gained clinical experience as an EMS provider, registered nurse, physician, or other allied health practitioner prior to entering the educator program.

Goals and Objectives: This course will enable you to: plan and organize a course, including a clear understanding of the roles and relationships of everyone from your medical director, to your instructors, to your students; engage students throughout; incorporate ethical lessons into didactic and skills instruction; identify resources for research and policy; serve as a mentor and communicate the value of EMS instruction.
