Mitch Sekine Curry Lunch Fundraiser

Family and friends of UCLA Paramedic alumnus Mitch Sekine gathered Sunday, October 15, to honor his memory and contribute to the scholarship bearing his name.

Mitch was a 2006 graduate of the UCLA Paramedic Education Program who died in a tragic automobile accident in 2007. To honor his memory, his dedication, and his commitment to saving lives, his family and friends established the Mitch Sekine Memorial Scholarship to assist UCLA paramedic students complete their education.

In an extraordinary display of community, volunteers on Sunday prepared and served about 600 bowls of Emiko Sekine's -- Mitch's mother's -- famous curry, raising approximately $9,000 for the scholarship fund. Since the establishment of the scholarship, the fund has assisted 18 Mitch Medics, who have gone on to leading roles in the agencies and communities they serve. Said Katie Martin, a Mitch Medic and now a UCLA Paramedic Education faculty member, "I put a picture of Mitch on my refrigerator during school, and when things got rough it reminded me there was a whole family that believed in me."
