Paramedic Education
This division houses the UCLA-Daniel Freeman Paramedic Education Program, the Paramedic Refresher and Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) Program.
Excellence.
It’s our history
Established by Daniel Freeman Hospital in 1970 as one of the first paramedic training programs in the nation, the program joined forces with the UCLA Center for Prehospital Care in 1999. As one of the original paramedic education programs in the country, and the first nationally accredited, UCLA-Daniel Freeman Paramedic Program proudly continues the tradition of creating exceptional and compassionate healthcare professionals. We have a proven record with over 3,000 graduates around the world!
It’s our passion
Our motto is “matching energy with energy” which allows us to create the most conducive learning environment for every motivated student. Our students have:
- a 92% program completion rate
- demonstrate a 90% first-time pass rate on the National Registry Exam
- and have a 99% employment rate within 6 months of graduation
and it’s available to you!
Our program, as always, is open and available to private students (students do not have to be affiliated with or sponsored by fire-service agencies) and gives them the opportunity to become paramedics in preparation to enter the fire-service or other healthcare environments after graduation.
Program Highlights Include:
- Nationally recognized faculty members who are professional educators, authors, and renowned presenters such as Dr. Baxter Larmon, Associate Professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Ms. Heather Davis, MS, NREMT-P, Mr. Brian Wheeler, CCEMT-P, and others!
- A professional faculty comprised of experienced licensed paramedics
- Over 30 part-time instructors who are active professionals (including firefighters, paramedics, nurses, and physicians) in their respective fields
- A dynamic and innovative Course Curriculum based on National EMS Education Guidelines for Paramedics
- Human Anatomy Lab – a unique educational privilege
- Clinical Internships with affiliated Los Angeles area trauma centers and hospitals that include rotations in Pediatrics, Labor & Delivery, and Operating Rooms working directly with participating anesthesiologists.

Accreditation
The program is accredited nationally by the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Heath Educational Programs, the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for EMS Professionals, and approved locally by the California Department of Health Services and the Los Angeles Emergency Medical Services Agency.
Mission Statement
To elevate the profession of paramedicine by educating emergency medical services (EMS) providers in the U.S. Department of Transportation National Standard Curriculum, thereby enabling them to provide the highest level of prehospital medicine and compassionate patient care, while preparing the future local and national leaders of EMS.
